Glossary — Recall test
How to measure brand recall
Most brands never find out whether their buyers remember them. The ones that do measure recall stop guessing whether their branding worked.
On this page
To measure brand recall, you show buyers the brands in your category the way they actually meet them, then ask which names come back afterward with nothing in front of them. Our version is the recall test. We run it before we start and again after the work ships, and the gap between the two is the proof. Recall is the mechanism the Memorability Score turns into a single number from 0 to 100. Safe is a template, and a template is invisible. If it doesn't get remembered, it doesn't ship.
- The recall test measures unaided recall against the look-alikes your buyer actually sees.
- Run it before the work and after it ships. The gap is the proof, not a promised number.
- Aided recall is recognition. Unaided recall is the number that moves a decision.
- The test feeds a Memorability Score from 0 to 100. Improving recall is a process, not a lucky logo.
What is the recall test?
The recall test is how we measure brand recall against the look-alike competitors your buyer sees next to you.
We show an audience five to ten brands from your category, presented the way your buyer really meets them, not as a quiz. Later, with nothing in front of them, we ask which ones they remember. The names that come back are the ones that earned recall. The rest were seen and forgotten.
We run it twice. Once before we touch anything, so you have a baseline. Once after the new work ships, so you can see what moved. The gap between those two numbers is the proof, and you can see it in our work. We would rather show you the lift than promise you a result we do not control.
It is our own instrument, not an external study, and it is the demonstration behind the Memorability Score. The score is the number, the test is where the number comes from.
Why measuring brand recall matters
Most studios never measure recall, which is why they can never tell you whether their work did anything. They hand you a prettier logo, you feel good in the meeting, and nobody ever checks whether a single buyer remembers you a week later.
That gap is expensive. Open any category and the pattern is the same: every brand converged on the same palette, the same stock photos, the same three adjectives, and the buyer files them all under one blurry label. This is sameness, and it is why brands get forgotten. When you cannot be told apart, you cannot be recalled, and safe is a template, and a template is invisible.
Recall is the thing underneath all of it. It is the ROI of branding almost nobody puts a number on, the difference between being on the buyer’s list and being the name they say first. If you are going to spend on brand, measuring brand recall is how you find out whether the spend bought you memory or just decoration.
Measuring brand recall, step by step
Here is how to measure brand recall without a research department. The recall test runs in five steps.
1. Pick the real competitive set. List the five to ten brands your buyer actually weighs against you, not the ones you wish you competed with. Recall is relative. You are measured against the brands seen in the same afternoon, not against an ideal.
2. Show them the way a buyer meets them. Present the set the way it shows up in real life, in a scroll, a shelf, a pitch list, a search result. A brand quiz measures effort. You want to measure what sticks when nobody is trying.
3. Ask unprompted first. After a gap, with no logos in front of them, ask which brands they remember. This is unaided recall, the hard bar. Write down which names surface on their own and, just as important, what people think each one stands for.
4. Then prompt. Now show the names and ask which they recognize. This is aided recall, the softer bar. The distance between what people recall unprompted and what they only recognize once reminded tells you how deep the memory actually goes.
5. Score it, then repeat after the work ships. Turn the result into a baseline, do the branding, and run the exact same test again. The lift, not the absolute number, is what proves the work. Recall measured once is a snapshot. Recall measured before and after is evidence.

Aided vs unaided recall: what the test actually measures
Aided recall and unaided recall get treated as the same thing. They are not, and the difference is the whole point.
Aided recall is recognition. You show the buyer your name and they say yes, I have seen that. It is a low bar. Most brands in a category clear it, which is exactly why it flatters everyone and proves nothing.
Unaided recall is memory. The buyer pulls your name out of their head with no prompt, and can say why you matter. That is the number that moves a decision, because when a buyer is in the market and your name surfaces first, you get considered before anyone else does. A brand that is only recognized, not recalled, gets shopped on price instead.
The recall test measures both, but it is built to expose the unaided number, because that is the one your competitors are quietly losing on and never checking.
What counts as a good brand recall score?
There is no universal pass mark, and any studio that hands you one is selling a story. Recall is relative to your category, your competitive set, and how crowded the space is.
So we do not chase an absolute. We turn the test into a Memorability Score from 0 to 100, built from three inputs: how well buyers recall you against your direct look-alikes, how distinctive your brand is with the logo removed, and how clearly a stranger can say what you do after five seconds. Then we watch the gap between your before and after. A brand that jumps from the bottom of its category to the name people say first has proven the work, whatever the raw percentage.
The number to care about is not how you score today. It is how far the score moves once you stop playing safe.
How to improve brand recall after you measure it
Once you have measured it, improving brand recall is a process, not a lucky logo.
It starts with clarity, not decoration. The brands people remember are not the most decorated, they are the clearest. When a buyer instantly understands who you are and why you exist, you lodge in memory. When they have to decode you, you slide out of it. So the work runs in one order: decide the one true thing only you can claim, name what you stand against, and build a visual language a competitor literally cannot wear. Then hold that line everywhere, so recall compounds instead of resetting.
That is the work behind the the full brand build, and it is what a branding agency should actually be measured on. If you want the full picture of why recall is the real return on branding, start with what memorability means, then come back and put a number on it.
If you want to see where you stand today, start with the score.
FAQ
How do you measure brand recall without a big research budget? You do not need a panel of thousands. The recall test works with a small, honest sample of people who match your buyer. Show them your real competitive set, wait, then ask what they remember unprompted. The signal shows up fast, because sameness is obvious once you look for it.
What is the difference between brand recall and brand awareness? Awareness is whether a buyer has heard of you. Recall is whether they can pull your name out of memory on their own and say what you stand for. Awareness is being on the list. Recall is being the name they say first. Awareness is easy to buy and easy to lose.
What is a good brand recall percentage? There is no fixed number, because recall is relative to your category and how crowded it is. What matters is the gap between your recall before branding and after. The lift is the proof, not the raw figure.
How often should you run a brand recall test? Run it before you start any brand work to set a baseline, and again after the new work has been in market long enough to be seen. After that, an annual read is enough to catch whether you are drifting back into sameness as you grow.
