Memorability Score
A 0 to 100 number for how well buyers remember you over the look-alikes around you.
On this page
The Memorability Score is a single number from 0 to 100 for how well your buyer remembers you over the look-alike competitors around you. It is built from three weighted inputs: how well buyers recall you against your direct competitors, how distinctive you are with the logo removed, and whether a stranger can say what you do in five seconds. It is the free first step on our ladder, and it is a number almost no other studio will give you, because almost none of them measure it. Safe is a template, and a template is invisible, and a low score is what invisible looks like.
- The Memorability Score is a 0 to 100 read on unprompted recall versus your look-alikes.
- Three weighted inputs: recall 50 percent, distinctiveness 30 percent, five-second clarity 20 percent. This is the unsafe.design method.
- Below 40 is invisible. 40 to 70 is recognised, not remembered. Above 70 is memorable.
- It is free. Run it before and after the work. The gap is the proof.
What is a Memorability Score?
A Memorability Score is a 0 to 100 metric that puts a number on brand memorability, meaning how well your buyer recalls you, unprompted, against the competitors who look and sound like you.
We coined it because the whole category talks about brand memorability and then measures none of it. A studio will show you awards, a moodboard, and a logo that tests well in a deck, and never tell you whether your buyer will remember any of it a week later. The Memorability Score fixes that. It turns an outcome everyone treats as a feeling into a number you can read today and track after the work ships.
It is the free first rung on our ladder. You do not buy anything to get a baseline. You get the number, you see where you stand against your look-alikes, and you decide from there.
What does the Memorability Score measure?
Three things, because being remembered takes all three. A brand can win one and still be forgotten.
The first input is recall against your look-alike competitors. Not whether people have heard of you, but whether your name is the one that surfaces first when the category comes up, ahead of the brands you compete with. This is brand recall, the mechanism underneath memorability.
The second input is distinctiveness with the logo removed. We take your logo off and ask whether anyone can still tell it is you. If your colour, type, and layout could belong to any of nine competitors, your logo is doing all the work and the brand is invisible the moment it is not on screen. That is the sameness wound, measured.
The third input is 5-second clarity. We show a stranger your brand for five seconds and ask what you do. If they cannot say it, buyers will not remember it, because clarity is what makes a brand relatable and relatable is what gets remembered.
How is the Memorability Score calculated?
The three inputs are weighted and combined into one number from 0 to 100. Recall carries the most weight at 50 percent, because recall is the outcome we are actually selling. Distinctiveness carries 30 percent, and 5-second clarity carries 20 percent. This is the unsafe.design method, not an external index.
The recall input comes from real recall testing: we show an audience five to ten brands from your category, the way your buyer really meets you, and measure which ones they remember afterward. Distinctiveness and clarity are scored from the logo-removed and five-second reads described above. Weight each, add them up, and you have a Memorability Score.
Because it is one consistent number, you can run it before we start and again after the work ships. The gap is the proof. We would rather show you the lift than promise you a number we do not control.

What is a good Memorability Score?
Here is how we read the bands, using the unsafe.design method.
Below 40, you are invisible. Buyers cannot separate you from your competitors, and you are being shopped on price because there is no other reason to pick you. Between 40 and 70, you are recognised but not remembered. People have met you, but you are not the name they say first, so you get considered late or not at all. Above 70, you are memorable: your buyer recalls you unprompted and can say what you stand for. That is the range where a brand starts winning deals before the pitch.
Most brands that come to us score in the middle band. They are not bad. They are forgettable, which costs more.
Memorability Score vs brand awareness metrics
They measure different things, and the difference is the whole point.
Awareness metrics and brand trackers measure reach and recognition: how many people have heard of you, whether they recognise your name from a list. That is a low bar, and you can spend heavily to clear it and still lose. The Memorability Score measures unprompted recall, distinctiveness, and clarity, relative to your look-alike competitors. It is not asking whether they have seen you. It is asking whether they remember you when it counts and can tell you apart from the brand next to you. Awareness is being on the list. The Memorability Score measures whether you are the name they say first. For the full comparison, see brand memorability vs brand awareness.
How do you get a Memorability Score?
You start free. The score is rung 0, the free diagnostic, so you can see where you stand today without a sales call or a quote wall.
If the number is low, the fix is not a nicer logo. It is the strategic work underneath: deciding the one true thing only you can own, building a visual language a competitor cannot wear, and holding it everywhere so it compounds. That is the the full brand build, and the Memorability Score is how we prove it worked, measured before and after.
If you want to stop guessing whether your brand is memorable, get the number. It takes about sixty seconds, and you will see exactly where you are blending in. You can also start from the cornerstone on brand memorability, or see the proof in our work.
FAQ
Is the Memorability Score the same as brand awareness? No. Awareness is whether a buyer recognises your name. The Memorability Score measures whether they recall you unprompted, tell you apart from your look-alikes with the logo removed, and understand what you do in five seconds. You can be aware-of and still forgotten.
How is the Memorability Score different from a brand tracker? A brand tracker measures reach and sentiment over time. The Memorability Score measures the three things that decide whether you get remembered against your direct competitors, and it is built to run before and after the work so the lift is falsifiable, not a vibe.
Is a Memorability Score free? Yes. It is rung 0 on our ladder, the free first step. You get a baseline before you buy anything.
Can you improve your Memorability Score? Yes, and it is a process, not a lucky logo. You raise recall, distinctiveness, and clarity by getting clear on who you are and building a distinguishable brand you can hold as you grow. We prove the change in the work we ship, before and after.
